Every woman wants her complexion to look flawless, but the reality is that perfect, dewy skin can be hard to achieve, and then must be maintained. So instead, most women must rely on foundation to offer that flawless effect, something that’s easily achieved with the right makeup base.
The base for your makeup is hugely important, as what your foundation sits on will affect the way it looks.
‘Dewy’ refers to a shiny – not to be confused with oily -, healthy, flawless looking complexion. It’s all about highlighting natural beauty opposed to a full face of makeup, which is why Korean women focus more on skincare, with makeup being the finishing touch.
Skincare is of great importance to women, and such dedication means that eastern culture, particularly Korea, is at the forefront of research into new skincare products and application techniques. Exporting of skincare products more than tripled in 2015, with the demand for ‘dewy’ skin soaring across the globe.
With Korean skincare brands such as The History of the Whoo making headlines all over the world, dewy skin has never been more achievable. All you have to do is get foundation ready.
The better skin you have, the less makeup you need to apply. For Korean women, less makeup is the ultimate goal, but the idea that less makeup equals more beauty is a concept that is gaining momentum globally.
To take care of your skin and ensure it’s foundation ready, it’s crucial that skin is well hydrated. This means drinking lots of water, eating well, and investing in skin care products like serums and essential oil-rich moisturisers.
Choose products that work with your skin type and apply them using a dap and tap motion with clean palms, and finish by cupping the face with your palms for better absorption. For around the eye area, use a ‘dab and tap’ technique with your ring finger to ensure reduce tugging and pulling on your skin. Both of these approaches will prevent the skin from stretching, stimulate your circulation, wake up your complexion, and work to flush out any toxins that have built up in your lymph nodes. And a surge of blood flow thanks to gentle patting will give you the natural, healthy glow you’re after.
If the canvas on which you are going to work is smooth and supple, it’s going to be easier to work with. Without proper preparation, foundation can look patchy, dry, flaky and grey when applied – and particularly as the day goes on – so the key is to prepare your skin pre-application.
Your canvas should always be blank, so clean the skin first with warm water and a quality cleanser like The History of Whoo Jinyulyang Essential Foam. Rub a small amount of cleanser into wet hands and massage onto the face in a gentle circular motion.
Alternatively, you could choose The History of Whoo Cheongidan Hwa Hyun Cleansing Foam.
Next, apply a skin balancer such as The History of Whoo Cheongidan Hwa Hyun Radiant Rejuvenating Balancer to balance the skin, and turn dull, dark skin into dewy and bright skin. Apply a moderate amount and pat for absorption. Once absorbed, this balancer closes and tightens the pores, preventing an uneven complexion.
If you notice any specific issues, like dark spots or wrinkles, apply The History of Whoo’s Gongjinhyang Seol Whitening Essence to blemishes and allow to absorb while you turn your attention to your eyes.
Should your eyes need a lift, apply The History of Whoo Jinyulyang Jinyul Eye Cream to improve the appearance of wrinkles and increase elasticity. Pat lightly along the eye area using your fourth finger.
To complete your smooth and supple base, moisturise to hydrate the skin and keep it looking soft and supple all day. Choose a rich, potent cream like The History of Whoo Gongjinhyang Seol Whitening & Moisture Glow Cream SPF30/PA++ to protect and soothe your skin from environmental damage. Used at the last stage of your skin care regime, this cream offers deep hydration when applied to the whole face.
Sun protection is an essential element of every skincare routine, but it is one that is neglected by many. The History of Whoo Gongjinhyang Jin Hae Yoon Sun Cream is specially formulated to ensure your skin receives the best possible protection from the sun and your environment as you go about your day.
Now you have your radiant base, you’re ready to apply your foundation.
To create a perfectly flawless natural base, you should first apply your foundation to your forehead, cheeks, nose and the tip of your chin. Use the cushion included in your foundation compact to spread the foundation evenly with a gentle massaging motion.
When applying your foundation to larger areas such as your cheeks and forehead, move the cushion in broad strokes to prevent unevenness. Once the initial layer is done, pat the skin lightly and rhythmically, ensuring you reach all contours of your face. For the bridge of your nose, work the cushion in a downward motion after tapping the cushion onto the foundation sponge. Take it all the way down to your chin.
Use the cushion to dab under your eyes, over your nostrils, and around the mouth. If you have any areas of concern, apply a second layer.
To hide unwanted shadows, cover dark circles and rid dullness from the corner of your eyes, apply under-eye concealer and move outward. Using your fingers, tap to cover evenly. To give greater definition to your lips, apply concealer to the corners of your mouth and use your fingers to gently blend. Should you still see spots, freckles and blemishes, take the tip of a concealer brush and apply over the area of concern.
Complete your flawless look by applying a finishing powder with a brush to settle the concealer. If your face is lacking natural shadow and tones, appearing flat and unnatural, apply a bronzer in two shapes on your face, an “E” or a “3” depending on what side of the face you’re working on, and a “W”.
If you want to add a little drama, apply a shimmering pearlescent highlighter to the centre of your brows, along the bridge of your nose, on your upper and lower lip and on an angle at the top of your cheekbones.
Finally, sweep a touch of blush on your cheeks to boost your glow even further.
Foundation is a woman’s secret to flawless skin, but only when applied on the right surface. Achieve the right base, and flawless skin is achievable every time.
